Sponsored by the Association, together with the Bricklayers ADC of NJ, the Bricklayers Labor Management Committee and the IMI MASONRY
THE ONLY CHOICE!!
Established in the Fall of 2003, the competition provides New Jersey Institute of Technology School of Architecture students an opportunity to develop a solution for a unique design/build situation and then build a critical masonry element working directly with masonry professionals and craftworkers. "The emphasis of our competition is on the importance of linking design ideas with hands-on experience," stated our Association’s Immediate Past President, Michael Schmerbeck.
"The Masonry Design/Build Competition establishes understanding and mutual respect between design and building professionals," says Urs P. Gauchat, Dean of the School of Architecture. "Architecture students are introduced to the parameters of masonry materials and, as you would imagine, a more informed designer will certainly create a higher quality product."
"When we began this program seven years ago, no one ever imagined it would turn into such an integral part of the NJIT educational process, and one of the most unforgettable experiences in the students’ academic pursuits at the School of Architecture," commented Mr. Schmerbeck.
The competition is judged by world-renowned architects, International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers representatives, the Dean of Architecture and other industry professionals.
The program garners prize money for the winning teams, but more important than the prize money is the hands-on experience that helps to bridge the gap between designers and building professionals.
The most recent Masonry Design/Build Competition was held the weekend of April 18th & 19th, 2009, and once again the students far exceeded all of our expectations!
